Since Pittsburgh Public Schools started enforcing the school bus camera safety program in July, you wouldn't believe the number of violations.
9,202. That's the number of technical stop arm violations captured in the Pittsburgh community since July 2023.
That averages a rate of 47.9 violations per week day.
PPS board member Sylvia Wilson put the numbers into perspective.
“Our kids are going to school to learn and be educated,” said Wilson. “We don’t expect our children to be harmed on their way to school, leaving school just because we want to provide them an education.”
the head of external affairs for Bus Patrol, Jason Elan wants to know what it will take for people to finally follow the law?
“Last year, a child died, a teenager died trying to get on the bus through no fault of their own because someone did not follow the law and stop for that school bus and there are countless other examples that happen everyday including here in the City of Pittsburgh where kids are needlessly put in danger because someone decides that they don’t feel that that are obligated to follow the law,” said Elan.
PPS officials plan to further educate residents about the state law requiring motorists to stop for the school bus to try and further avoid these horrific instances.
