The polls are open for Tuesday’s special election for a seat in the Pennsylvania House.
And, the outcome will have repercussions beyond the 35th district.
Democrat Matt Gergely died in January at the age of 45, just two months after winning re-election to the seat which represents parts of Clairton, Port Vue, Munhall, Duquesne and other neighboring communities.
His untimely death meant Democrats, who had a one seat majority in the state house found itself tied with Republicans at 101.
If Democrat Dan Goughnour, a police officer, wins, the party would maintain control.
A win by Republican Chuck Davis, the head of White Oak Borough Council would give the GOP a thin one vote lead in the State House and would mean a change in leadership.
Libertarian Adam Kitta is also on the ballot.
The polls close at 8 pm.
