PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - Pittsburgh City Council has three months to approve whether or not the question of annexing Wilkinsburg will appear on the borough's ballot in the Spring election.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald says the unification would help create more economic development in the community.

"It's become very difficult for that community, because of the millage rate - the property tax millage rate - to get private investment," Fitzgerald said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show Thursday.

Wilkinsburg has lost over 200 businesses over the last few decades, and the population loss is 10 times worse than other places around the county.

"Their property values would go up probably 30% as soon as the merger went through." said Fitzgerald. "You'll start to see private investment and people coming into the great community again."
