The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is offering free daytime admission through the month April during their “Electronic April” event.

One free general daytime admission will be offered in exchange for recycling a small electronic device, collected by the zoo.

The following devices will be accepted

·        Cell phones (any age)

·        Tablets and eReaders

·        Smart watches (Apple or Android

·        Digital Cameras

·        MP3 Players

·        GPS Devices

·        Handheld games devices

Those that bring in an electronic device will also receive a 10 percent coupon that can be used for retails times in the zoo the day of the visit.

A visitor can bring more than one electronic device for additional tickets, but cannot be rain checked for another day.

Laptops are not accepted and visitors can also bring any power cords or cables, but need the device itself for the free admission.

The free admission is being offered by the zoo along with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Gorilla SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction).

The zoo says in a release that recycling electronics helps raise more to support gorilla conservation initiatives. In addition, a mineral used in cell phones and other electronics is mined in areas of Africa that are also gorilla habitats.

Recycling can help reduce the need to mind the mineral, called coltan.
