Pittsburgh's mayoral race headlines Tuesday's Democratic primary in the City of Pittsburgh.

Pennsylvania State Representative and candidate for Mayor of Pittsburgh Ed Gainey voted at Catalyst Academy in the Lincoln-Lemmington neighborhood.

"We were positive," he said of his campaign. "We didn't get into the mud. You can't build a city throwing dirt. We stayed positive. We brought people together."

About 10 minutes away, the incumbent, Mayor Bill Peduto, submitted his vote at Starrett Classical Academy. He said "I believe the people of the City of Pittsburgh realize that the city is in a much better place than it was in 2013. City government is stabilized. We've been able to take care of massive crises."

Tony Moreno and Michael Thompson round out the Democratic primary race for Pittsburgh Mayor.

For voters, some say it's the issues that brought them to the polls Tuesday, more so than the candidates.

"The conditions in the Allegheny County Jail, I think, is an issue. There are several others," said Bill Hoffman.

Voter turnout in the primary is expected to be low, especially compared to November's Presidential Election.

Allegheny County says 120,000 people requested mail-in ballots.

Earlier in the day, the county had to deal with a number of issues at polls that made for a rough start to the primary.
