Plan to deal with problems on the South Side expected next week

Over the July 4th weekend, mayhem broke out on the South Side with firecrackers and rocks being thrown at police.

Pittsburgh City Council member Bob Charland's district includes the East Carson entertainment zone.

On the Big K Morning Show, Charland said police have a dozen officers assigned there, but, “12 officers is just not enough.”

“So, I want to say that there are additional plans in place that we’re trying to work through,” added Charland.

Charland says he will announce plans to improve safety on the South Side early next week, after logistical hurdles are cleared.

Part of the plan involves control for large, unruly crowds.

What it won’t likely include is a curfew.

Charland says pulling off a curfew would be difficult.

“We take a minor off the street, we also take an officer off the street because we have to babysit the minor in the zone command there while we wait for a parent or a guardian to come pick them up,” said Charland.

Another issue is, there is no requirement for someone under age to have an ID on them while on the street.
