The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is scrapping plans for a movie theater Downtown.

Officials had been pursuing a plan to convert the former Bally Total Fitness Club space on sixth street into a six-screen theater and entertainment space.

But, the Trust said Monday that renovation costs had more than doubled, and there may not be a market for a movie theater anymore as less people attend movie theaters these days.

The Trust said that funding partners had agreed to reallocate resources designated for the theater into capital improvement projects for the Byham Theater, the Benedum Center, and the O’Reilly Theater.
