Point Park Police starts new ABLE program

Point Park University Police are learning how to speak up when they think a fellow officer is making a mistake on the job.

The department is one of about 215 law enforcement agencies accepted into the ABLE program, which teaches first responders effective ways of intervening with colleagues on the job, if necessary.

Chief Jeff Besong says it can be difficult for an officer to tell a colleague when they could be making a mistake, especially when rank is involved.

"Sometimes it is tough for that police officer to tell his supervisor that he, or she, is not doing the right protocol. This training enables them to have that education."

The program's main goals are to prevent misconduct, reduce mistakes and promote health and wellness.

He also says ABLE also presented to the local Chiefs of Police Association Tuesday, meaning other departments could be considering the training too.
