Pittsburgh Police say they stopped a possible shooting outside of Westinghouse High School with help from the community.

Pittsburgh Public Safety sent out a release on Thursday that described the incident that took place on September 15.

They say multiple units responded to Westinghouse after they received reports from a bus driver and a “concerned parent” around 2:30 of a suspicious SUV driving circles around the school as the students were about to be dismissed.

Three juveniles were seen inside the vehicle wearing masks.

At 2:50, police saw the SUV speeding across North Murtland, driving recklessly as student were talking.

Police pulled the car over at Frankstown Road and Washington Boulevard. Three males were detained.

The SUV was revealed to have been stolen and a gun with a spent shell casing was found. In the back of the SUV, a gas canister was found, along with a large cloth wick, “incendiary materials that are often used to burn vehicles that are stolen or used in violent crimes.”

Two of the juveniles were arrested and faces charges of receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, driving without a license, incendiary devices and reckless driving.

The third was released to a guardian.

“Pittsburgh Police would like to acknowledge the quick actions of observant individuals who reported suspicious activity and very likely prevented a crime,” Pittsburgh Public Safety said in a statement.
