The State Department of Environmental Protection has declared a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for the Liberty-Clairton Area.

It takes effect tomorrow when temperatures and wind will likely cause higher quantities of fine particulate matter.

Code orange indicates unhealthy pollution levels for sensitive groups.

Young children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems in the area should stay inside as much as possible.

Officials says residents and businesses within the Air Quality Action Day area can help reduce fine particulate matter air pollution by:

Reducing or eliminating fireplace and wood stove use; Avoiding the open burning of leaves, trash, and other materials; and Avoiding the use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

The DEP says the worst of it is expected from 10 to 11 am.
