The Port Authority recognized six of its officers who responded to the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse with awards of merit today.
CEO Katharine Kelleman said the officers helped victims from the collapse, evacuated nearby residents and diverted traffic.
"When the rest of us are running away from a collapsing bridge and a natural gas cloud, these people are running toward it, and they're doing it to help us; people they don't know, not related to. It's a selfless act."
She said the officers were treated on scene for natural gas exposure, then got back to work.
On February 7th, the National Transportation Safety Board released its preliminary report on the bridge collapse in Point Breeze.
According to the report, the collapse began at the western end of the bridge, or the Squirrel Hill side.
Two major support beams were considered "fracture critical," which means if they failed to support the structure, the bridge would collapse.
