A Pittsburgh bakery is responding after a Consumer Alert by the Allegheny County Health Department.
A report last week showed an extensive rodent issue in several areas of the Prantl’s location on Walnut Street in Shadyside.
Over the weekend, Prantl’s Bakery President Joe Cugliari responded to the report on social media, saying safety and quality have not been affected its products.
“We take food safety and cleanliness extremely seriously and appreciate the opportunity to address this matter,” said Cugliari.
He says the rodent activity and droppings were discovered in an empty basement and in areas they no longer use, adding the Shadyside location is run “primarily as a retail store.”
“Custom cake decorating is done upon request; however, most custom cake orders are completed in Greensburg, and all baking is produced at our main bakery there,” said Cugliari.
While the basement area is no longer used, Prantl’s says “we recognize that rodent control can be difficult in an urban area. Our bakery is next to restaurants and several other food businesses, which creates a shared environment where these issues can arise despite strong preventive efforts.”
They say an exterminator will now be making monthly visits to keep the property rodent-free.
