This week, we learned volunteers who want to help clean up the filth in the city's homeless encampments are being turned away.
An email from an official with the Department of Public Works told the volunteers there are safety concerns and the camps need to be unoccupied. In other words, it's unlikely to happen. An investigative journalist told Larry and Marty this week on the Big K Morning Show city officials wouldn't even tell him what plans are in place for cleaning up the camps.
This is another confirmation the city's homeless policy mostly enables the people pitching tents at the expense of everyone else.
The mayor has said "homelessness is not a crime." But when the homeless commit crimes, enforcement has been sporadic or nonexistent.
One example is the theft of $250,000 in merchandise from a convenience store since January.
It was closed this week. Another Downtown business gone.
Unless the laws are enforced, consistently, Pittsburgh will continue to get the behavior it tolerates.
