A Pennsylvania senator is proposing new legislation aimed at cracking down on felony animal abuse.
Senator Dan Laughlin says the bill, known as Aimee’s Law, is inspired by a six-month-old husky found abandoned in freezing temperatures in Erie County earlier this month
Despite the care she received from the ANNA Shelter, the puppy later died.
Two people now face charges.
The legislation would create a publicly searchable registry for anyone convicted of felony animal cruelty.
Laughlin says the goal is to prevent repeat offenses, help law enforcement, and protect public safety.
“This legislation would require individuals convicted of felony animal cruelty or aggravated cruelty to animals to be placed on a registry, similar to Megan’s Law,” Laughlin writes in a memo. “It will help protect animals and communities, deter repeat offenders, and support enforcement of existing penalties for egregious cruelty that currently result in felony charges.”
He encourages the public and animal welfare advocates to support Aimee’s Law as it moves through the legislative process.
