Protest honoring 13-year-old killed in crash turns tense in West Mifflin

Several people are facing charges after a protest honoring a 13-year-old boy killed in a crash turned tense Sunday in West Mifflin.

Dozens gathered along Kennywood Boulevard to honor 13-year-old Terrel Byars Junior, who was struck and killed in December.

West Mifflin Police say the protest escalated when demonstrators blocked traffic along Route 837 and refused orders to leave the roadway.

Police say pepper spray was used to disperse the crowd and that one officer was injured.

Authorities say multiple people were arrested, including the boy’s father.

Byars' mom Naomi White says the protest was meant to demand answers and push for safety changes along the road where her son lost his life.
