The latest Quinnipiac national poll is out ahead of November’s midterm election, with voters weighing who they want to control Congress.
The poll finds Democrats with an edge when voters are asked which party they want to control the U.S. House of Representatives, 51 percent to 39 percent for Republicans.
Among independents, 54-percent favor Democratic control, compared with 30-percent for Republicans.
Quinnipiac polling analyst Tim Malloy how significant that gap is for Republicans, with five weeks to go before Election Day.
“I would say just something short of devastating, it’s not good, it’s been trending this way for a long time,” said Malloy. “Nobody’s crazy about either party, including the members of those parties, but in the end, all Americans, independents included, would much rather have the Democrats in charge right now.”
Given a list of seven issues, a majority of those polled believe the Democratic party can handle health care, cost of living, international conflicts, the economy, corruption in government and artificial intelligence better than Republicans.
On immigration, 47 percent think the Democratic Party is the better party to handle the topic, with 44 percent going with Republicans.
President Donald Trump’s job approval stands at 34 percent, while 61 percent disapprove.
That ties his highest disapproval rating in Quinnipiac polling.
Malloy says that the disapproval of Trump will likely affect the results in November.
Also, the poll finds 71 percent are more likely to support candidates in favor of stricter artificial intelligence guardrails.
