It’s been seven and a half months since Karns City quarterback Mason Martin suffered a serious injured during a game that has kept him in the hospital and rehabilitation since.

Martin’s father Denny has been providing updates since, and his latest one is very encouraging.

Denny says that Mason has been having a “wow” moment almost every day as he continues to improve.

He adds his son’s “strength and upper body endurance are improving daily. He is able to sit up and hold his head up for longer periods of time.”

The therapists have also started introducing items and other activities that Mason used to do before he suffered his injury, including a speech therapist putting a cell phone in his hand.

Denny says Mason knew what to do and was able to scroll through the phone, selecting videos and songs.

In a Facebook update over the weekend, Denny shared a prank that Mason and his nurses played on him:

Last week when I came back from lunch, two nurses were talking to Mason. The one nurse said, “hey Mason, if you like me more than your Dad put your thumb up.” Mason immediately raised his thumb. She asked him again and again he raised his thumb. I must admit I was taken back by this and started to question any validity of his responses. So I asked him the same question and again he gave the same response. Finally I said sternly, “Mason! Come on now, really?” I asked him again and this time he kept his thumb down. The nurses started laughing. She told Mason before I came back that they wanted to play a prank on me. She told him to put his thumb up when she asked if he liked her more than me. I rate this as one of my top five favorite moments in rehab. For him to be able to process, remember, and follow through with a joke was amazing to me.

Denny also took time to thank the staff that has been working hard with Mason and those to attended a recent baseball game in support of Mason.

“Gratitude is a choice and it’s not difficult to find things to be grateful for with this kind of support,” said Martin. “Thank you all so very much.”

Denny posted again the next day expressing how positive he is that his son will make a full recovery.

“Mason WILL make a full recovery,” said Martin, “He WILL walk again. We don’t have any room in our lives for those that don’t believe this. There is too much at stake to let anymore doubt or negativity creep in.”

Those that want to help the Martin family can still donate on this GoFundMe page.
