Hopewell Area officials say the rodents were found in a wall at Hopewell Elementary.

A letter from the superintendent notified families about 20 students became ill and left school that day, saying their symptoms were similar to a stomach virus.

A Post-Gazette report says it is unclear if the illnesses are related to the rodent infestation.

The next day, another 30 students left because they were sick.

Add to that 100 others who were absent.

More than a third of Hopewell Elementary students were not there.

The school has transitioned to virtual learning while restoration is underway to be followed by air quality testing.

The state Department of Health is investigating the source of the sickness
