Ross Township is making history, hiring their first female police chief.
Cristyn Zett was most recently a commander for Pittsburgh police, serving the department for over 20 years.
She says more female representation is needed in law enforcement.
"It has been a long time coming to see women take more prominent roles in law enforcement, especially in the southwestern Pennsylvania area," explains Zett.
"It's a very difficult job for women to do based on traditional roles and the way we expect people to behave, and so we lose a lot of female officers who are amazing."
Commissioners say the hiring comes following internal management issues and recommendations by a third-party study of the department.
Women only make up about 18.4% of all police officers in the United States and only around 8.3% make up police chiefs.
