Residents in Rostraver are complaining of a rodent problem along Route 51.
One resident told KDKA-TV that she's seen hundreds of rats outside her window on Adams Road.
Dr. Chad Gore tells the Big K Morning Show what makes this such a tough problem to solve is that rats are very intelligent rodents.
“It’s unfortunate for us, because it makes it difficult to control them at times,” said Gore. “They can learn in the environment, they learn new when new things pop up in an environment such as control measures and they can avoid them and if they ever have a negative encounter with one of those, they’ll never go back to it again.”
Gore says to overcome a large infestation like the one in Rostraver, a more holistic approach needs to be taken.
“Trap where you can, you . . . you might have to treat the burrows that the rats are in, you can even deploy canine-mitigating dogs as part of the strategy,” said Gore.
Rostraver officials say the problem seems to stem from one particular property along Route 51, due to unsanitary conditions.
