Safety sensor stalls Steel Curtain coaster at Kennywood

The Steelers-themed rollercoaster at Kennywood had an issue over the weekend, but official at the park said there were no safety concerns.

The Steel Curtain “came to a stop on the lift hill” on Saturday. A spokesperson for Kennywood says the sensors are sensitive to anything on the track.

“The ride’s safety systems acted as designed,” Kennywood General Manager Ricky Spicuzza said in a statement.

The ride was stopped for about 20 minutes and then finished the track, letting the passengers off safely.

The ride opened normally on Sunday and has been running regularly since.

Kennywood’s statement reads:

Rides, including The Steel Curtain, are designed with highly sophisticated control systems and safety features that allow these attractions to operate in a safe and efficient manner. If these control system sense something out of the ordinary, even if it is minor, they are designed to automatically stop the train in a safe location, if necessary.

After being closed for the entire 2024 season, Kennywood reopened the Steel Curtain on May 24.
