The Salvation Army will give away backpacks, school supplies, clothes and haircuts as part of their Back-to-School Bash Saturday in the South Hills.

Captain Justin Caldwell, one of the event's organizers, says they want to help families in need, especially during a time when many are facing financial hardship.

"Families have experienced extreme trials over this last year," he said. "We've encountered many families that are finding needs that they didn't expect."

The cost of school supplies is also expected to go up this year because of increased costs.

A survey from KPMG found parents will spend an average of $270 on school supplies this year, up from $250 in 2021.

"These expenses such as haircuts and backpacks and school supplies, they really add up quick, and so the community really came together to make this happen for these families," Caldwell said.

Along with school supplies, the event will also have food and activities.

The Back-to-School Bash will be at the Salvation Army at 1060 McNeilly Rd.
