The Saxonburg community is mourning the loss of a youth football player and his grandfather, after they were killed in a car crash late Friday evening.

Pennsylvania State Police say 65-year-old David Faulx was driving north on Winfield Road when he approached a sharp right curve at a high rate of speed.

The Jeep that Faulx was driving went into the southbound lane where it collided with a truck, killing Faulx and 12-year-old Zane Rupert.

Rupert was a student at Knoch.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family.

Ashley Mazur-Pettigrew wrote in part, “Zane was an incredible young man, son & brother. He was the sweetest grandson, nephew, an adventurous cousin, & a wonderful friend to so many people. His bright smile & energy always lit up a room.”

Rupert was a member of the Saxonburg Spartans 12u team.

The team released a statement that said, in part, “He was a force on the team and was vital on our line. To say that he will be missed isn't adequate, the impact he has had on those around him will be long felt. Our sincerest condolences to Zane's family, his teammates, and coaches.”

Troopers say the driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.
