The Seneca Valley School Board will discuss a resolution Monday that would remove all Native American imagery from the district.
School Board President Eric DiTullio said during a meeting last week the resolution stems from a request from the Seneca people.
"This is something that's being done because the people that this was meant to honor and started honoring back in the 60's when it was developed have now asked us not to honor them in that way," he said. "No different than if the family of Ryan Gloyer came to us and said 'we don't want having a school named after our family member anymore.'"
DiTullio said the resolution is still a draft and will also be up for public comment Monday.
A group of Seneca Valley students asked the school board to remove Native American imagery and the Raider mascot from the school during a meeting in April.
In that presentation, the students said the Seneca Nation of Indians, a federally recognized Seneca entity, called Native American imagery and mascots for schools "blatantly offensive."
The topic has been the subject of heated debate online, including petitions for and against the change.
