Shuman Detention Center to close in September, 12 children remain at facility

Shuman Detention Center will close in September.

Allegheny County manager Willie McKain tells the KDKA Radio Morning Show that what happens next for the remaining 12 children at the facility is up to the family courts.

"Right now our focus is to support the courts who are going to make determinations as to where the kids are placed" McKain said. "The courts are going to have to come up with a system and decision for future kids that come into Shuman, because Shuman will not be available."

McKain says that out of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania, only 14 currently have a juvenile detention center.
