
Six people were shot outside the Destiny of Faith Church in Brighton
Heights this afternoon.
The church in the 3700 block of Brighton Road was holding a funeral for John Honezes, Jr.
The 20-year-old Hornezes was shot and killed on Cedar Road on Saturday, October 15,
2022.
Two women waiting at a bus stop near the Sunoco station on Cedar
Road were also killed that night.
Six victims were taken to area hospitals. Five people are being treated at Allegheny General Hospital, and one victim is now at UPMC’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh Police did not release the names, age, or sex of the shooting victims.
Pittsburgh Police Commander Richard Ford did say during a 2:00 PM press conference that four of the shooting victims were able to take themselves to the hospital while two were transported while being treated by medics.
As of 3:45 pm, all six victims were listed in stable condition.
Pittsburgh Police tell KDKA Radio the Shot Spotter system reported five shots fired at 12:04 pm, and 15 additional shots were fired shortly thereafter.
Leon Rockymore is the CEO of Roxamore’s Grieve from Home was at the church live-streaming the funeral for those who were not able to attend.
He was outside the church speaking with the funeral director to tell him the church was full.
That’s when he tells KDKA’s Rick Dayton that he saw multiple people wearing ski masks start whispering to each other before gunfire erupted.
Mayor Ed Gainey spoke to reporters on Friday afternoon giving an impassioned plea for the violence to end and asked anyone with any information to come forward.
“We need to make sure that this never happens again...and we will be working around the clock to do whatever's necessary to apprehend whoever did this heinous thing today,” said Gainey. “If we’re going to heal this city, heal the North Side, it's because we'll work together. We need someone to come forward. In box me, do whatever you need to do. Get to me or law enforcement and let us know what you know."
