An important link to the South Side and Station Square is set to close Wednesday evening.

At 9 p.m., the Smithfield Street Bridge, which spans the Monongahela River between Downtown and the South Side, will close for overnight construction work.

The work is part of an $8.49 million bridge preservation projection set for completion later this summer.

During the work hours, only pedestrians and emergency vehicles will be allowed on the span.

The bridge is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. Thursday.
