South Hills DUI Task Force conducting checkpoint Friday

The South Hills DUI Task Force is conducting a sobriety checkpoint Friday on Route 837, reminding residents if they are going to drink to plan ahead and have a sober driver.

On Thursday, Pennsylvania State Police said troopers are also using checkpoints and roving patrols through the Fourth of July holiday period to stop drivers under the influence.

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll says for last year's Fourth of July holiday period alone there were 279 crashes, resulting in four fatalities.

“Of those crashes, 47, 47 were alcohol-related resulting in one fatality and 38 injuries,” said Carroll.

He says 13 were drug related, resulting in five injuries. Carroll adds a Designated Driver is the person who has had nothing to drink, not the least to drink.
