The Friends of the South Park Buffalo Preserve is mourning the sudden loss of one of its calves.
Baby Nova passed away early Thursday morning after experiencing a medical emergency late Wednesday.
Nova was just born on Sunday to mother Crimson.
The preserve says Nova “was simply too weak to nurse.”
Members of the preserve, along with the Parks Department Director and Parks Superintendent, along with Allegheny County Police were on the scene trying to save Nova.
“Following the veterinarian’s guidance, Nova was made as comfortable as possible on a bed of towels near the lower feeding area,” a Facebook post reads. “A fan was brought in to help keep the calf cool. Two bottles were successfully given, and everyone remained there until just before midnight.”
While the Preserve is heartbroken over the loss of South Park’s newest calf, they are grateful for everyone coming together to try to save the calf.
“We witnessed an incredible level of compassion, dedication, and hands-on care from the leadership of the Parks Department. They weren’t directing from a distance. They were on the ground, in the mud, doing absolutely everything within their power to save Nova.”
A necropsy (autopsy) will be performed to help determine the cause of death.
