South Park Buffalo Preserve welcomes newborn calf 'Kai'

The South Park Buffalo Preserve has announced the birth of a “bouncing baby buffalo”.

Kai was born to mother Lily and father Big Head on Tuesday morning.

The birth of Kai makes 12 total buffalo at the nature preserve on Sesqui Drive in South park.

The Friends of the South Park Buffalo Preserve made the announcement on Facebook and details Kai’s first few hours after being born.

“After spending time alone with Baby Buffalo Kai, mom Lily did walk Kai over to the family to formally introduce the baby,” the group wrote. “We’re hoping for a new playmate soon, but big sister Takoda and cuz Elu definitely took a quick interest giving little Kai a lot of friendly buffalo licks and head rubs!”

The preserve is expecting another calf from mother Rosie some this year as well.

Kai marks the 28th calf that Big Head has fathered during his time at the preserve.

You can see Kai and her family at Sesqui Field at the preserve with the best place to catch a glimpse near Sesqui Drive. “Always the best place to see the buffalo family.”

The preserve is free and open to the public daily from 7 a.m. through dusk.
