South Side restaurant vows to improve after rat seen on beer taps

A bar/restaurant on the South Side has released a statement after video of a rat on beer taps was released.

The Urban Tap on the 1200 block of East Carson Street says the rodent being in their establishment as “unacceptable.”

The rat was recently seen apparently chewing on something at the bottom of the beer taps.

The owners of The Urban Tap say the moment they found out about the rat, they contact the Allegheny County Health Department and “brought in additional professional pest control services.”

“We conducted a full inspection of the building with the Allegheny County Health Department, reinforcing all possible entry points, increasing monitoring, and tightening our sanitation and nightly procedures,” the owners wrote on social media.

They go on to say that construction near their building has increased rodent activity near the restaurant, “but that does not excuse what happened. Maintaining a clean and safe environment is our responsibility, and I take that seriously.”

The Urban tap says they are committed to earning the public’s trust again and will do it “through action – not words.”

As of Tuesday morning, The Allegheny County Health Department's website shows that last inspection of The Urban Tap was in May 2025. There were no major issues during that inspection.
