The mystery of the Star Wars vending machine on Mt. Washington

August 28 2026

Pittsburgh's Headlines: August 28, 2026

What’s going on with Pittsburgh’s most famous vending machine?!

The Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace-themed Pepsi machine has disappeared, like Obi-Wan Kenobi, into the force, only to be replaced with an obvious knockoff.

The Pepsi machine on Mt. Washington near the Pittsburgh Fire Station 27 on Virginia Avenue is now painted to look like the original one.

Having been there since 1999, the vending machine has gained cult status from Pittsburghers and Star Wars fans around the country, who have come to see it in person.

The Fire station uses the pop machine to raise funds and a few years ago, Pepsi donated $10,000 to Station 27 and supplied them with enough soda to keep it filled for a year.

But, what happened to the original machine remains a mystery.

An influencer on TikTok is being accused by some for taking it after he said he wanted to take it.

But, Pittsburgh photographer Carla Cardello who runs City Life Adventures on Facebook says has heard that the machine is out for repairs and will be back soon.

KDKA Radio has reached out to city officials for confirmation.
