Pennsylvania's primary election is still over a week away, but state officials want voters to have plans in place now.

Last Tuesday was the deadline to register to vote for the May 17 primary, but this Tuesday, the 10th is the last day to request a mail-in or absentee ballot.

Acting Secretary of State Leigh Chapman says as of Thursday morning, voters have requested more than 850,000 mail-in and absentee ballots.

"Their ballot must be received by 8 p.m. on election day, which is May 17th. [Ballots] postmarked by that time do not count."

Those voting by mail can return them in a drop box, return them in person to the county elections office or mail it.

Pennsylvania has a closed primary - meaning only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote. However, all registered voters can cast a ballot for special elections and local ballot questions.
