KDKA Radio Editorial: Successful 18th Annual Warmathon

Long range forecasts indicate brutal winter conditions are coming to an end, and not a moment too soon.

The numbers show we endured the coldest start to a year since 1994 and racked up at least 25 days with temperatures below 15 degrees, the second most all-time.

As the deep freeze fades away, higher utility bills are arriving. Electricity rates went up 6 to 10 ½ percent in December. Natural gas rates are up 5 to 6 ½ percent as well.

These higher rates, combined with much higher usage during a long stretch of extreme cold, made the 18th annual NRG/KDKA Radio Warmathon more relevant than ever. And you responded with kindness, helping us raise more than 364 thousand dollars to benefit the Dollar Energy Fund.

More than 1,000 of Western Pennsylvania families in need will be getting utility assistance thanks to your generosity. And you can still make a donation online through the Dollar Energy Fund Warmathon page.

To the listeners and sponsors helping Pittsburgh-area families stay warm and pay their utility bills: We couldn’t do it without you!
