Southern Allegheny County and portions of Washington County were struck by tornadoes this past weekend.

The National Weather Service preliminary damage survey after Saturday's tornado in Washington County says wind speeds reached nearly 120 miles per hour.

The EF2 tornado touched down in Peters Township and moved nearly six miles through Finleyville and Union Township, damaging at least 12 homes.

The roof of a church was blown off in Finleyville. Washington County Commissioner Electra Janis says Crossroads Church is accepting donations after sustaining damage.

Accuweather's Matt Benz told the Big K Morning Show it’s “something that we wouldn’t necessarily expect here in early May, we’d expect that more toward the end of the month into June but we had all the right dynamics, unfortunately, overhead in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Benz.

There were two other twisters: an EF0 twister in Fayette County near New Salem and an EF1 from Fayette County to Preston County in West Virginia.

Benz says the weather is currently calming down, but adds we are getting into the time of the year for more active weather.

A Tornado warning was issued in the early morning hours of Wednesday last week, with one touching down in the North Fayette area, near Pittsburgh.
