Kennywood has announced the Thunderbolt rollercoaster will close this weekend for the rest of the year.
“The King of Coasters will begin a maintenance improvement project to ensure the Thunderbolt remains one of the greatest wooden coasters in the world for generations to come,” Kennywood said in a release.
Kennywood says the last day to ride the Thunderbolt in 2026 will be on Monday, August 17.
Originally built at “The Pippin” in 1924, the coaster was redesigned and opened in 1968 as the Thunderbolt.
In 1974, the New York Times rated the Thunderbolt as the “top roller coaster” in the United States.
The Thunderbolt consistently ranks as one of the best wooden roller coasters in the country.
