Troopers: Woman deposited fraudulent check for online lover

Pittsburgh's Headlines: July 28, 2026

A Washington County woman is accused of taking some bad advice from a man she met on TikTok.

That's because she allegedly agreed to try and deposit a doctored check supposedly from an auto repair shop.

Prosecutors say 60-year-old Debra Shearer received the check from a man she'd met on TikTok and began the plan, Shearer would deposit the check, worth nearly $20,000 and then send him the money and he would send her a cut.

They say she knew the check was fraudulent but agreed to try to deposit it anyway.

Officials say the bank flagged the check as bogus and froze Shearer's account.

She's charged with theft by deception.

The man who allegedly sent her the check hasn't been charged yet.
