Speed humps, updated crosswalks and more are coming to the South Side slopes in an effort to calm traffic.

The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure announced Monday “traffic calming” construction will take place on Plus Street between South 18th and Brosville Streets.

According to data collected in 2021, over 50 percent of vehicles that travel on the street drive above the posted 25 mph limit, with 85 percent of those drivers going 31 mph or faster.

The city says the crash history on the road “indicated a strong need for traffic calming intervention.”

The city says the construction consists of “four speed humps and improved pedestrian crossings with high-visibility piano key crosswalks. Speed humps are midblock traffic calming devices that raise the entire wheelbase of a vehicle to reduce its speed.”

Signage will also be installed to alert motorists of the new humps and other changes.

Work is scheduled to begin on August 9, with the project lasting about two days.

Hours of the construction will be between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
