Tributes to Tunch Ilkin following his death all have something in common: He was beloved because Tunch loved people.
There were news reports of his years playing with the Steelers and later work as a commentator on game days, but when people spoke of Tunch they continually mentioned his Christian faith, community service and compassion.
It’s an accomplishment just to make it in the NFL. Tunch outdid that by being selected twice to the Pro Bowl and made the Steelers All-Time team.
He followed that up with more than two decades of success in broadcasting. And yet when people remembered Tunch they didn’t talk about his resume.
They used words like: great, incredible and wonderful.
What everyone remembers is how Tunch made them feel, and he succeeded in making EVERYONE feel better.
