PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - Tippin Gymnasium, the home court of the Clarion University Golden Eagles', was named after University of Kentucky Men's Basketball Coach John Calipari, a former men's basketball player and 1982 graduate of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education school, during a ceremony Tuesday night.
Calipari, a Moon Township native, elevated himself from a small suburb of Pittsburgh to the leader of one of the NCAA's most elite basketball programs.
"I only wanted to be a high school teacher and a coach," Calipari said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show Friday. "That's what I thought I wanted to be. And went to college and said maybe I want to be a college coach."
The high-profile figure said he never forgot where he came from.
"When your from Western PA - you are doing more with less, you are doing more than what's expected of you," Coach Cal said.
