PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - The U.S. and other countries around the world are watching to see what will happen in Ukraine, as thousands of Russian troops are stationed along the country's border.
"We have family there, my wife's mother is there, our nieces and nephews, and her brother and his wife are there," said Fr. Jason Charron, of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carnegie, "So we've got some stake in the game here."
Up until this week, the Ukrainians in North America were more nervous about the situation than Ukrainians in Ukraine, as Russia has been engaging in this behavior for the last eights years.
"In order for Russia to be an empire, it needs a warm water port," Charron said. "In order to have a warm water port, it needs to have the land between Russia and the Black Sea, and that land happens to be Ukraine."
Charron says If Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to reassert Russia's imperial dreams, then that means Ukraine, Kyiv, Odessa and everything between.
Flights out of Kyiv were cancelled last week because some insurance company's do not want to be held liable if an aircraft were to be shot down.
