A new report from Public Citizen is raising questions about three UPMC hospital, but the health system is pushing back.

Public Citizen is warning that UPMC Mercy, UPMC McKeesport, and UPMC Greene could be at risk due to financial losses and reliance on Medicaid funding.

But UPMC is disputing the findings.

Speaking on the Marty Griffin Show, spokesman Paul Wood said the report should be taken “with a grain of salt” and said it does not reflect the reality of the system.

“it failed to recognize that every hospital UPMC operates is part of an integrated system, we don’t operate these hospitals as stand-alone, independent hospitals,” said Wood. “By a system approach, this means our hospitals can share specialists, share support staff, share technology, share best practices, share clinical programs.”

Wood reaffirmed that all three facilities remain part of the system and will continue operating, saying there are no plans for any closures.

UPMC adds it will keep monitoring federal changes while remaining committed to patient access and care.
