UPMC is part of large scale testing of a COVID vaccine in children.
The KidCOVE trial is through UPMC Children's Hospital and the Pittsburgh Vaccine Trials Unit, the same facility that hosted COVID-19 vaccine trials for adults.
Children's is one of 100 sites participating in a Moderna trial, testing the vaccine in kids from 6 months to 12 years old.
Dr. Judy Martin, a member of Pitt's Center for Vaccine Research, says the very first step for families interested in enrolling their kids is a one-on-one conversation with experts to "explain to them what the requirements are, the study, what we're hoping to find, what the safety measures are in place and answering their questions and helping them to determine if this is the right decision for them and their family."
This phase of the trial will look at vaccine safety and efficacy in young kids.
Children will receive either two doses of vaccine or two doses of a placebo.
