Hearing for man accused of killing PennWest California student

Pittsburgh's Headlines: September 2, 2026

Charges against a son and mother in the death of a PennWest California freshman were held for court during a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

18-year-old Royce Moser is accused of fatally stabbing 18-year-old Karoline Heintz and his mother, Rachel, is accused of helping him attempt to cover up the killing.

Evidence presented by prosecutors included internet searches from Royce Moser's phone about removing fingerprints, how long doorbell camera video last, “what does God say about murder”, “What if a demon controlled you and your murdered someone” and if an 18-year-old can get the death penalty.

Washington County DA Jason Walsh talked with KDKA-TV, saying he believes the crime was premeditated.

Royce and Rachel Moser are being held without bail at the Washington County Prison and are due back in court for arraignment in October.
