Cynthia Kenderson and Nicky Jo Dawson join me this week to talk about the BlaQK House Collection! It's a safe space where black artists can come to showcase themselves through art, music, and other forms of expression.
The BlaQK House Collection is a gallery downtown that was built strictly for those who were turned away by other Pittsburgh galleries. For some, it's a cry for help or a home where they've been excluded. For the artists, it's a platform to share their heart, their sadness, their fight, and their vision.
From sculpture to paintings, the BlaQK House Collection gives artists the canvass they've longed for and couldn't get here in Pittsburgh.
I'm sure people are saying "who cares?" Or "what's the difference between a black art gallery and the other galleries?" Simply that! The saying goes "it's in the eyes of the beholder". Well, that beholder isn't always accepted by everyone. The beholder has been hurt, killed, turned away, ignored, shamed.
Not just by those who aren't black or are supporters of art. Some by our own community.
So Nicky Jo and Cynthia said why not be YOU at the BlaQK House! It's a judgement free zone. It's a place where being unique is acceptable. Not just for black artists but also for the LGBTQ+ community which is why the name BlaQK House is spelled the way it is.
