Pittsburgh Headlines: October 2, 2026

Independence Health System has finalized its agreement to merge with WVU Medicine.

Five hospitals: Butler Memorial, Clarion, Frick, Latrobe and Westmoreland, along with their physician groups and subsidiaries are transitioning to operate under the new brand.

The acquisition makes WVU Medicine the second-largest health system in Western Pennsylvania.

The agreement was signed in early June with WVU Health planning to invest $800 million in the hospitals around Western PA.

“This agreement secures a stronger future for our hospitals, our caregivers and the patients who depend on us,” Ken DeFurio, president and CEO of Independence Health System, said. “It brings the scale, capital, and clinical strength needed to protect local access to care and positions this region for long-term growth.”
