On Monday, May 31, 2021, the country will celebrate Memorial Day to honor military personnel who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday also pays tribute to those who have lost their lives while performing military duties. The holiday is one of 10 federally recognized holidays, meaning many businesses and offices will be closed.

School

Most schools throughout the U.S. take a day off from learning for Memorial Day, including grades K-12, as well as colleges and universities.

Public libraries

Public libraries will be closed on Memorial Day.

Federal office buildings

The majority of federal officed will be closed on the holiday, including your local Department of Motor Vehicles, the Post Office and all U.S. Postal Services, and banks and federal courts. Nearly all bank branches across the country will also be closed as a result.

Public transportation

Local public transportation systems will still be operational on Memorial Day. This includes bus and railway systems. Be sure to check interstate railway systems for any adjusted holiday schedules.

Airlines

Anyone planning a long weekend getaway will still be able to travel by air, as airports will remain open for the holiday. Be sure to get to the airport early to avoid long security lines and a busy travel day.

Restaurants

Most restaurants are generally open on Memorial Day, and offer discounts to military veterans and active service members. Be sure to call ahead or check online if a specific restaurant is still open on the Monday, or if there are any changes to operation procedues due to COVID-19 restrictions.
