A nationwide recall has been issued for nearly 5 million portable blenders sold at Costco, Target and Walmart that have sparked fires and left dozens of people injured.
In a recall notice, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says the BlendJet 2 Portable Blender can overheat and catch fire or have blades break off during use, posing fire and laceration hazards to consumers.
The CPSC has received received 49 reports of minor burns and one report of a laceration injury -- along with 329 reports of the blades breaking while in use, and an additional 17 reports of overheating or fires resulting in property damage claims of approximately $150,000.
"While none of the reported incidents resulted in serious injury or significant property damage, out of an abundance of caution, our company updated the base of the BlendJet 2 to feature thicker blades and an improved electrical configuration," BlendJet said in a statement, adding that new models contain the updates.
The recalled blenders were sold in a variety of colors and designs at Costco, Walmart, Target and other stores nationwide and online at BlendJet.com from October 2020 through November 2023 for between $50 and $75.
The blenders measure approximately 9.5 inches in height and 3 inches wide and weigh approximately 1.5 pounds. Serial numbers are printed on the bottom of the base along with "blendjet2" and "The Original Portable Blender." Units where the first 4 digits of the serial number are between 5201-5542 may be subject to recall.
Any BlendJet 2 with a serial number that begins with 5543 or a greater number is not subject to this recall, as it already features the updated base, the company said.
The company has an online search engine to check if your serial number is included in the recall.
Customers should stop using the recalled blenders immediately and report their product to BlendJet. The company will provide owners of affected units who register with a free replacement base unit (and matching lid) for their portable blender.
