Shooting at Michigan hospital: One victim hospitalized, suspect in custody

Updated 9:50 a.m. EST — The Troy Police Department has shared that the suspect is now in custody and the "all clear" has been given.

The department shared the news in a post to social media Thursday morning, hours after the suspected gunman opened fire in a parking garage near the Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been shared.

Updated 9:25 a.m. EST — The Troy Police Department has shared that the suspect is an employee of the hospital and may have been wearing scrubs at the time of the incident. The shooter is also still on the run at this time.

The victim, identified as a 25-year-old, has been hospitalized at this time and is in stable condition.

Lt. Ben Hancock with the Troy Police Department shared that it is still unknown if the suspect and victim knew each other outside of work.

The shooting is also believed to have taken place in one of the hospital's parking structures.

Updated 8:50 a.m. EST — Corewell Health has shared an update on the shooting, noting that one victim is receiving emergency care at this time.

"One victim is in the emergency department for medical treatment. Patients with services scheduled should not come to the hospital at this time. Patients may call the department where they were scheduled for service directly," a spokesperson for Corewell Health shared.

Original Story — Several law enforcement agencies have responded to a report of an active shooter at Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan, on Thursday.

The Troy Police Department confirmed there has been a shooting at the hospital in a post to social media on Thursday.

“This appears to be an isolated incident however the Suspect is not in custody. Please avoid the area. Media staging area will be at the Troy Training center,” the statement said.

Nearby residents were advised to shelter in place and avoid the area in an alert that went out early in the morning.

ClickOnDetroit reported that staff at the hospital received a message warning them of the active shooter.

“There is an ACTIVE SHOOTER Troy Hospital in the Parking Structure building. Police are enroute. Please take immediate personal safety measure and follow the run, hide, fight guidelines. For those not currently at the facility, stay away. Do not return to the facility until the all clear has been signaled,” the message said, according to the outlet.

It is unknown if anyone has been injured or killed at this time.

The suspect is not in custody at this time.

Witnesses on scene shared with WWJ News Radio that they were informed to hide by hospital employees.

"We heard that the shooter was by the parking structure," Brian Pagent, a cardiac rehab patient who was on a treadmill at the time and hid in a closet, said.

He added that "it was scary at the time. The workers did a great job... but we didn't really know what to do."

WWJ News reporter Charlie Langton shared that the buildings surrounding the hospital are being evacuated as police are continuing to search for the suspect.
