Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones of the InfoWars website had a tantrum this week outside a Connecticut courthouse where he is testifying in a defamation case filed by families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.
“This guy is going to report I didn’t show up today,” he screamed while pointing at a reporter in a video shared by The Daily Mail. “That’s lying, that’s corporate fake media and that’s…shame on you!”
Just before these screams, Jones claimed that he had been told not to attend the court dates at the Westbury, Conn., courthouse. Law & Crime livestreamed the trial Thursday.
This trial is for one of multiple cases filed by the victims’ families in response to Jones’ false claims about the tragic 2012 massacre in nearby Newton, Conn., where 20-year-old Adam Lanza murdered 20 children and more than six adults. According to The Guardian, Jones claimed in 2012 and 2013 that “no one died” during the shooting and that the grieving families faked their children’s deaths.
“I said some things that weren’t right and hurtful, and I’m sorry for that and I apologize for the 500th time,” Jones said Wednesday.
A jury in Austin, Texas, last month ordered Jones to pay the parents of a first-grader murdered in the mass shooting $50 million, according to Bloomberg. Connecticut State Judge Barbara Bellis ruled in November that Jones was liable by default for defamation in a non-jury proceeding, the outlet reported. She is also presiding over the current trial.
“Here’s the problem: the judge says I can’t say I’m innocent, the judge says I can’t talk about this being a political trial, when all it is is political,” Jones said in a video posted Thursday by FOX 61. He has also complained that the judge won’t let him bring up Hillary Clinton.
According to The New York Times, Jones has faced other legal challenges outside the Sandy Hook lawsuits. These include issuing a public retraction related to claims that Clinton and other top Democrats were trafficking children from a Washington pizzeria. The false claims inspired a gunman to attack the restaurant, Comet Ping Pong, in 2016.
Jones has been known to scream on his InfoWars show, as seen in this supercut posted by Vice News in 2017.
The New York Times reported Thursday that “after a day of testimony that was tense but comparatively restrained,” compared to other days, “the last few minutes of the session erupted into shouting.”
When Chris Mattei – an attorney for the Sandy Hook victims’ families – played the tearful statement of a parent, Robbie Parker, the night after the shooting, Jones lashed out, according to the outlet. Norm Pattis, Jones attorney, attempted to raise objections.
“The judge spoke sternly to Jones and Pattis after things calmed down,” said The Times. “After the court closed for the day, Jones could be heard shouting and laughing in an adjacent room,” and, “as Pattis followed him out of the courthouse, he could be heard muttering, ‘I’m not my client’s keeper.’”
